Some of the most exciting and important advances in biology are now being made in the field of genetics, so our BSc Genetics (including Year Abroad) gives you the opportunity to study these fast-changing areas. You spend your third year abroad.
Genetics is at the forefront of modern biology, from the latest advances in medicine to the conservation of endangered species. The study of genetics includes understanding how genes are passed from one generation to the next, how DNA works and the effect of variation and natural selection. Your course teaches you about the genetics of populations, biodiversity, human health and cloning, with a strong emphasis on molecular and cellular aspects.
Core modules develop your knowledge of genes and genomes, show how cells differentiate to form all the specialised tissues present in complex organisms, and teach you how the delicate regulation of cell growth can be disrupted and lead to cancer. In your final year, your research project enables you to carry out individual practical research work using the latest molecular genetic methods: gene cloning, PCR, cell culture and advanced microscopy. Project areas include gene regulation in cancer, transgenic plants and mutational analysis in viruses.
Our courses are based on flexibility and choice, so that you can tailor your degree to your interests. In your first year you usually take four or five pre-requisite modules for your course allowing you flexibility to try subjects you have not come across before.
With a small number of exceptions, once you successfully complete the first year of your BSc, you qualify to enter the second year not only of that course but also of a range of other courses. This means you can change your course, providing you have taken the appropriate pre-requisites and places are available.
We continue to offer a range of optional modules in your second and final-years and most courses allow you to undertake a final-year project. The research project enables you to work in one of our research laboratories alongside our internationally reputed scientists, studying real science in a real scientific environment. Some of our science courses offer an optional extra year of an industrial placement.
We operate a credit framework for our awards, which is based on principles widely used across the UK university sector. Each module has a credit rating attached and our standard three-year course consists of 360 credits (120 credits in your first year, and 240 credits across your second and final years).

Universities in the United Kingdom use a centralized system of undergraduate application: University and College Admissions Service (UCAS). It is used by both domestic and international students. Students have to register on the UCAS website before applying to the university. They will find all the necessary information about the application process on this website. Some graduate courses also require registration on this website, but in most cases students have to apply directly to the university. Some universities also accept undergraduate application through Common App (the information about it could be found on universities' websites).
Both undergraduate and graduate students may receive three types of responses from the university. The first one, “unconditional offer” means that you already reached all requirements and may be admitted to the university. The second one, “conditional offer” makes your admission possible if you fulfill some criteria – for example, have good grades on final exams. The third one, “unsuccessful application” means that you, unfortunately, could not be admitted to the university of you choice.
All universities require personal statement, which should include the reasons to study in the UK and the information about personal and professional goals of the student and a transcript, which includes grades received in high school or in the previous university.

"The Academic Excellence Scholarship can provide up to a 50 % reduction in tuition per semester. These scholarships will be renewed if the student maintains superior academic performance during each semester of their 3-year Bachelor programme.
